ELYRIA, OH (WOIO) -

Norfolk Southern Railway officials talked with residents Thursday morning about the dangers of trespassing on railroad property.

The officials were in the area between Olive and Chestnut Streets in Elyria, which is adjacent to railroad tracks.

Officials say walking on railroad tracks is not only illegal, it is also very dangerous.

Earlier this year, a man in Elyria was struck and killed by a train. And, in 2016, three people were killed while trespassing on railroad property along a 15 mile stretch of track between Elyria and Vermilion.

85 people were stopped for trespassing in the Elyria area.

In Ohio, 16 people died and 18 people were injured while trespassing on railroad property. Ohio is ranked ninth in the nation for trespassing incidents.

About 150 trains travel through Elyria every day.
