Dangerous conditions prompt beach hazard alert for Lake Erie swimmers

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The weekend is expected to be gorgeous, but swimmers and beach-goers should think twice about heading into Lake Erie.

A beach hazard alert has been issued for Lake Erie swimmers that lasts through Saturday afternoon because of high waves and powerful currents.

The alert, issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect for the lakeshore spanning from Lucas County to Erie County, Pa.

Strong winds and large waves with rip currents are expected. The life-threatening conditions can be dangerous for even the most experienced swimmers.

Last weekend, a 21-year-old man drowned in Lake Erie. He fell off of a small raft in Lake Erie near Avon Lake and went underwater. The man struggled in the currents, and eventually drowned, according to the Avon Lake Fire Department.
