Scam alert: Sheriffs don't make a habit of demanding money for fines

Source: WOIO Source: WOIO
RICHLAND COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

The Richland County Sheriff's Office doesn't make a practice of demanding money for fines, warrants, subpoenas, etc.

Authorities have received reports from residents in the area that people are representing themselves as members of that office and demanding money.

This is a common scam throughout the U.S., as noted in a press release from the Sheriff's Office:

This is a scam and the citizens of Richland County and others throughout the United States in multiple jurisdictions experience similar scams.

If you should have any questions about any business with the sheriff’s office, it can always be handled in person at the office or calling 419-524-2412.

DO NOT GIVE CREDIT CARD OR BANK INFORMATION FOR PAYMENT TO ANYONE REPRESENTING THEMSELVES FROM THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE. THIS IS NOT OUR PRACTICE.
