Police departments battle on diamond, build unity

AVON, OH (WOIO) - Members of the Lorain and Cleveland Police Departments took to the field at Sprenger Stadium in Avon for a Sunday of softball, fundraising and camaraderie.

"A lot of times cops don't talk to each other from different communities. Sometimes we need to get together to talk about things, we can bounce things off each other, maybe form a connection," Cleveland Police Captain Keith Sulzer said.

Lorain patrolman Jesse Perkins noted the community relations aspect of the game.

We're people, we're not just robots that wear a uniform. Hopefully, events like this can show people that we are just normal human beings that have a job,” Perkins said.

Each department's charitable foundation took home at least $800.  The inaugural game was the brainchild of Lorain City Councilman Angel Arroyo.
