Cleveland Browns name Brock Osweiler as starting quarterback for preseason opener

Browns announce new starting QB

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson named quarterback Brock Osweiler the starter for the preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints.

"At this stage in the evaluation process of our quarterbacks, we are going to have Brock start the preseason opener against the Saints on Thursday night," said Jackson.

The announcement comes during a quasi-competition between three quarterbacks in training camp. The Browns traded for Osweiler during the offseason, Cody Kessler notched some pro experience last year during his rookie year with the Browns, and the team drafted DeShone Kizer in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. All three quarterbacks are each expected to earn more opportunities to earn the starting position as the preseason continues, according to Jackson.

During Osweiler's podium appearance on Monday, he said, "This league gives you opportunities. Sometimes you don't know when they're going to come. Sometimes you do know when they are going to come."

Osweiler also went on to explain how the quarterbacks got to this point. Jackson told the the quarterbacks that Osweiler will start, followed by Kessler, Kizer, and Kevin Hogan.

Jackson added, "A lot goes into our evaluation but it's always going to be about efficiently and effectively running the offense.

The Cleveland Browns take on the New Orleans Saints on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Cleveland for the team's preseason debut.
