EAST CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

A hit-and-run driver slammed into an ambulance in East Cleveland on Wednesday, speeding across neighborhood lawns while fleeing the scene.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. near Fire Station 2 on Shaw Avenue. Luckily no medics were inside at the time.

A source tells Cleveland 19 that the driver is in custody, and that he was found just a few blocks away.

The ambulance was parked at the time, and damaged in the collision. The extent of the damage is not yet known.

East Cleveland only has two working ambulances, so this could really hurt the city.

Residents may remember the city temporarily had no ambulances this past year after a loaned vehicle broke down.
