'Our hearts are heavy today': Flags lowered to half-staff to honor fallen Cleveland officer Vu Nguyen

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The office of Cleveland's mayor has ordered that flags on city properties will be lowered to half-staff in honor of police patrol officer Vu Nguyen.

Our hearts are heavy today as we try to understand his untimely death. Patrol Officer Nguyen served the citizens of the City of Cleveland admirably and passionately and he touched people’s lives every day with his uplifting personality.

Patrol Officer Vu Nguyen immigrated to the United States during the Vietnam War with his parents and fifteen siblings. His story is truly one that defines America. He dedicated his life to serving others. Patrol Officer Nguyen leaves behind a loving wife, two precious daughters, an extensive family, and many, many friends.

Nguyen passed away suddenly on July 6 while participating in a police training exercise.


Kids raise more than $5,000 for family of fallen Cleveland officer


The training exercise was held outdoors in 90 degree heat.
