CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - On July 2, 2018 Cleveland Patrol Officer Vu Nguyen was engaged in training exercises preparing to join the canine unit when he suddenly collapsed.
Nguyen was participating in a training exercise in 90 degree heat and fell victim to apparent heat stroke.
The officer died just days later from complications on July 6.
The entire city is heartbroken about the tragedy and is teaming up to help the family in their time of need.
Local children raised over $5,000 in support for the family through a lemonade stand.
Nguyen was beloved by the community, and spent 20 years on the force.
The Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association took the initiative to start a GoFundMe account for the family, to help in their time of need.
The funds will help support health care bills, funeral expenses, and the myriad expenses associated with providing a solid foundation for his wife and daughters' futures.
According to the Cleveland Patrolmen's Association, 100 percent of the funds donated to the effort will be given to his family.
