Sagamore Hills slugger makes the cut for Junior MLB Home Run Derby

SAGAMORE HILLS, OH (WOIO) - Connor Preisel, a 13-year-old from Sagamore Hills, will soon be on his way to Nationals Park in Washington D.C.

Connor is one of only eight players in the country who have qualified for the under 14 Major League Baseball Junior Home Run Derby.

"I can't believe this has happened to me, I never really thought this would happen, it's amazing I was able to compete for it," Connor said before his team played in their league championship game.

Connor won a local qualifier in Twinsburg and then traveled to New Jersey for the national qualifier. There he had to out slug 70 players, all with hopes of grabbing the one spot available at that qualifier, "I can't wait to be on the field to see where all the greats have played."

His biggest fans -- his family -- will be there cheering him on and that includes his proud dad, Greg Preisel, "I am just on cloud nine, its just fantastic, I am really proud of him."

Connor will compete at Nationals Park on Saturday afternoon and has a day full of Major League Baseball-sponsored activities on Sunday.

On Monday night he will roam the outfield during the Major League Home Run Derby, "That's going to be really fun I hope I get to catch a few, it will be really cool," he said.

This fall Connor will enter Holy Name High School where he hopes to play football, basketball and baseball.
