Kent State gives students $43,000 to replace damaged property

KENT, Ohio - Kent State is giving students $43,000 to replace computers and other property that was damaged in a dormitory fire in September.

Most of the 30 students' requests -- processed through the Ohio Court of Claims -- were worth several hundred dollars.

The fire during Labor Day weekend heavily damaged two rooms and caused smoke damage in several more. Most of the 245 students who live there were away for the weekend. The fire is believed to have been electrical, but the exact cause can't be determined because of the damage.

The fire caused $476,000 worth of damage to the building, which was covered by insurance.

University officials say they weren't legally obligated to pay to replace students' property, but wanted to help out.
