Red Cross gets more than $10,000 found buried

AKRON, Ohio - Buried treasure has new meaning for the Akron area Red Cross.

More than $10,000 in cash found last year while a crew excavated old basement foundations was turned over the Barberton Red Cross on Monday.

The owner was never identified. It might have been buried a half-century ago.

Three property owners and the company that hired the excavator were competing in court for the cash, but the Red Cross was offered as a compromise.

The Red Cross will put the money toward summer camp expenses.
