Couple charged in abuse case to return to Ohio

DES MOINES, Iowa - A couple accused in what police have called one of the worst cases of child sexual abuse they have seen will be sent to Ohio to face the charges.

Joseph Coles, 40, is accused of molesting a 13-year-old Ohio girl and impregnating her twice. Coles faces 242 charges, including kidnapping, rape, gross sexual imposition and endangering a child.

He was arrested on Tuesday after a nine-month investigation, which was aided by police in Parma, Ohio, where the girl once lived.

Coles waived extradition during a hearing on Wednesday in Polk County.

Coles wife, Dawn Coles, 36, faces five counts that include tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice.

Police said the couple lived in Des Moines for about a year. They will be held in the Polk County jail without bond until they are sent to Ohio.
