Woman's deportation fight might be over

AKRON, Ohio - An Akron area woman who was to be deported following a felonious assault and kidnapping conviction might have won her fight with the government.

Sandra Orantes-Cruz was ordered to be deported last year but won a reprieve after her criminal sentence was reduced. She was convicted in Medina County three years ago for a fight with a boyfriend.

She learned on Monday that the government's efforts to revive the deportation order failed. Her attorney, James Chin, says that the government could appeal but it's unlikely.

The 31-year-old would have been sent back to El Salvador, the country she left at age six when she was adopted by a Twinsburg couple. She never applied for citizenship.

Orantes-Cruz lives in Akron's Ellet neighborhood with her three sons.
