Police use marketing, Internet to battle decline in applicants

AKRON, Ohio - The police department in Akron is looking for a few good recruits.

To combat declining interest in police work, the department is enlisting the help of a marketing firm to lure candidates into law-enforcement careers.

Police officials say that they're probably going to add about 20 officers to the force this year. But they've seen a steady decline in the number of people taking the required civil-service exam.

So police are trying to draw qualified candidates into the field by hosting community-outreach programs and taking their recruiting campaign to the Internet, launching a Web site to explain the requirements and application procedure.
