Domestic problems land former Akron police chief in jail

AKRON, Ohio - Akron's former police chief has wound up in legal trouble, and jail, over domestic problems with his ex-wife.

Ex-chief Edward Irvine spent four days of a 30-day sentence in jail before the judge reduced the sentence on Tuesday.

The 70-year-old Irvine was jailed for ignoring a court order to leave the house that he gave up in divorce and another order that required him to pay support to his former wife. The sentence was reduced after Irvine complied with the court order.

Court records indicate that Irvine is $39,000 behind in support payments to his ex-wife -- a woman he was married to for 47 years.

While serving as chief, Irvine was investigated three times after his wife charged that he had beaten her. She later recanted the allegations, and Irvine denied any wrongdoing.
