COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A Mansfield Correctional Institution inmate died Friday morning after being assaulted by a cellmate, authorities said.
Jason Brewer, 27, of Lucas County, died at the Ohio State University Medical Center, according to Andrea Dean, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. He was serving a three-to-10-year sentence for attempted burglary, said Lt. Gary Lewis, spokesman for the State Highway Patrol, which investigates incidents at the prison.
Lewis said investigators were looking into the possibility that Brewer suffered "some type of strangulation" Thursday morning but wouldn't comment further. He said Friday no charges have been filed.
Brewer shared a cell in the facility's isolation section with the alleged attacker, who is from Sandusky County and was serving an eight-year sentence for having a weapon under disability, attempted burglary and attempted escape, Dean said. His name was not released Friday.
An autopsy by the Franklin County Coroner was planned for Friday afternoon.
