PITTSBURGH (AP) - U.S. Steel will open a new $86 million in-line quench and temper facility at the company's tubular steel operation in Lorain, Ohio, the company announced.
The facility will be part of the No. 3 Seamless Mill at U.S. Steel's Lorain Tubular plant. It will have an annual capacity of 340,000 tons and will produce tubular goods to serve energy producers and transportation markets. It also will manufacture specialized pipe products for high temperature applications.
The in-line quench and temper design takes advantage of residual heat remaining in the product after hot rolling to reduce energy consumption during the heat-treating process.
The board of directors of USX Corp. approved the project Tuesday. U.S. Steel is a subsidiary of USX Corp.
