AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A 2-year-old boy was severely beaten as a man was caring for him, police said.
Police allege Michael J. Woak, 26, of Akron, beat the child so severely a week ago that the boy's small intestines were perforated and required emergency surgery to repair. The child also had multiple bruises, cuts and swollen limbs, an indication of previous beatings, police said.
Anthony Criss was in serious condition Sunday night in the intensive care unit at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron.
Woak was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of felonious assault and one count each of child endangering and unlawful restraint. Woak was being held in the Summit County jail pending his arraignment in Akron Municipal Court.
Woak was charged with unlawful restraint because, the boy's mother told police, he physically restrained her and attempted to keep her from leaving his house to get medical help for the boy.
