Michigan Welcomes Ohio Smokers

MONROE, Mich. (AP) - Michigan businesses are hoping Ohio smokers will cross the state line to find a place to light up.

Ohio's statewide smoking ban has gone into effect today in nearly all of the Buckeye State's indoor public places. That includes bars and restaurants.

A bar manager in Ottawa Lake, Michigan, says she hopes to see a lot more people from nearby Toledo.

Toledo has had an indoor smoking ban since 2003, but people were allowed to light up in set-aside smoking lounges. The new state law will wipe those out.

The manager of a bar in Temperance, Michigan, says it is upgrading its air ventilation system to prepare for more smoke.

Ohio voters passed the smoking ban on November Seventh.
