Thousands Of Bootlegged Media Destroyed

Cleveland, OH - Police Chief Michael McGrath announced Friday that the Division of Police will destroy thousands of counterfeit and bootlegged DVD's, CD's and VHS tapes seized as part of two separate investigations into trademark counterfeiting and criminal simulation.

The items being destroyed mark the final disposition of criminal cases from 2000 and 2003 which resulted in multiple criminal convictions in the Greater Cleveland area.

The Cleveland Division of Police has worked with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) in investigating these and similar cases.

Some of the items to be destroyed were confiscated in the largest ever seizure of counterfeited intellectual property in the State of Ohio. Items seized in that case represented nearly $300,000 in displaced loss to artists represented by the MPAA and the RIAA.
