Lorain: Teacher Accused of Having Sex with 17-Year-Old

LORAIN, Ohio (AP) - A preschool teacher is being accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old boy in violation of school policy, Lorain school officials say.

The district is investigating allegations that the female teacher at Washington Elementary had a relationship with the student at Southview High School, district spokesman Dean Schnurr said Thursday.

The teacher, who had not yet spoken to school officials about the allegations, was placed on paid administrative leave, Schnurr said. The district began investigating as soon as it was told about the allegation on Sunday by the boy's mother, he said.

Lorain police Detective Sgt. Mark Carpentiere said no crime occurred because the woman was not the student's teacher and because he is 17 years old. The age of consent in Ohio is 16, he said.

Schnurr said that doesn't necessarily clear the teacher from facing district penalties, which could include termination.

"Even though nothing illegal has happened here, the Board of Education puts a much higher standard on the behavior and actions of our teachers," he said.
