Inmate Commits Suicide in Isolation Cell

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (AP) - Corrections officers discovered an inmate had hanged himself in an isolation cell at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution, prisons officials said.

Joshua Weldy, 33, was found early Thursday morning, said state prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Lyons. Prison staff is required to check on inmates in isolation once every half-hour, Lyons said.

Details of the death were under investigation, she said.

Weldy was not on suicide watch, Lyons said, but she did not know why he was placed in isolation.

Weldy was serving a four-year sentence he received in Miami County in 2005 for two counts of gross sexual imposition of a female youth, according the prison system's Web site.
