Prosecutor in Duke Lacrosse Sex Assault Wants Replaced

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The prosecutor in the Duke lacrosse sexual assault case has asked to be replaced.

Officials say District Attorney Mike Nifong sent a letter to the state attorney general's office requesting that a special prosecutor be assigned to the case.

Nifong has come under harsh criticism for his handling of the case. Legal experts have said his case against three lacrosse players accused of rape is weak, based only on the accusations of a woman whose told several different versions of the incident.

Some charges against the players have since been dropped. Now Nifong is facing ethics charges that could lead to his disbarment. T

The North Carolina State Bar says he violated the rules of professional conduct by making misleading and inflammatory statements about the athletes under suspicion.
