Overnight Fire Leaves Local Family Homeless

BEACHWOOD, Ohio - An overnight fire in Beachwood has left one family homeless and has taken the life of a family pet, 19/43 News reported.

Firefighters were busy for hours as they tried to put out the blaze at a home on Egdewood Drive that ignited early Wednesday morning.

When crews arrived, they found the house full of smoke.

The fire was difficult to put out because there were no visible flames, and there were no immediate clues as to where the fire was located.

"It was a basement fire, and the thing is for a basement fire, you have to go down into the basement, into the fire to put it out," Beachwood Fire Department Capt. Ken Taylor said. "We had no access to the fire from outside. My men had to go down the basement stairs in through the heat down into the basement."

The family was not home at the time of the fire. Their dog, however, was in the basement and died in the blaze.
