Blood Emergency Threatens; Rally To Respond

Cleveland, OH - The inclement weather last week ruined the potential to collect over 1,600 pints of blood. As a result, local supplies are now at a distressing low, leaving just hours' supply in six of the eight blood types. Aid from blood donors in other Red Cross cities was not available.

Today an exceptional effort will take place to recoup as many pints as possible. Executive Caterers at Landerhaven is the site of an event that has been geared up to smoothly handle hundreds of blood donors.

"We are urging those who were not able to donate last week, as well as donors who are able to help this week to visit the 10th Annual Give From the Heart Blood Drive at Landerhaven where we will be prepared with extra staff to handle an influx of donors," says Victoria Rothacker, Senior Communications Specialist. "In appreciation of those who come to donate blood, we will be offering gourmet food compliments of Executive Caterers, live entertainment from Judy Strauss, The Frankie Starr Band and Winelight and receive a limited edition Red Cross sweatshirt and other great gifts to take home."

The 10th Annual Give From the Heart Blood Drive will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 from 7 AM-7 PM at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, located on 6111 Landerhaven Drive in Mayfield Heights.

Ten years ago a special community celebration was formed when a local premier caterer stepped forward during a traditionally low blood collection time to help the American Red Cross. Executive Caterers at Landerhaven has sponsored what is now known as the largest single-day, single-site blood drive in Ohio, by opening their doors for blood donors to enjoy delectable cuisine and exquisite ambiance. Year after year, Executive Caterers has invited hundreds of neighbors into their facility to give from their heart and donate blood. Tomorrow's 10th annual blood drive is no exception and could not have come at a better time.

While walk-ins will be accommodated, for the convenience of donors, the Red Cross is encouraging appointments by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE.

All blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health and present a valid photo ID upon donation. Donors may give blood every 56 days. For more information about please contact the American Red Cross at: 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543)
