Elyria, OH - On February 23, 2007 at approximately 6:14 a.m. officers of the Elyria Police Department responded to a disturbance near the intersection of Furnace St and Lesnick Ct. A male was shot three times. The gunshot wounds are located on the arm, hip, and chin.
Officers conducted a traffic stop on the black Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the 500 block of Broad St. Officers located. Oman Ward, age 27, of Elyria inside the car. Ward had three known gunshot wounds. The wounds were to his right arm, hip and his chin. Lifecare Ambulance was contacted and responded_ Ward was transported to the EMH Medical Center then flown by Life Flight to Cleveland, Metro Hospital. There were three other occupants inside the car which are being questioned by police.
Officers responding the the area of Furnace St and Lesnick Ct located a handgun in the parking lot of 336 Furnace St. It is unknown at this time if this weapon was related to the shooting of Ward. This weapon was seized and placed into evidence.
Officers checked the surrounding residences for witnesses and evidence and located the front door to 316 Furnace St had been forced open. A check of the interior of that address revealed that nobody was present. The bullet cartridges, blood and broken furniture inside the residence indicating there was a physical alteration. A search warrant was executed at that address and all the pertinent evidence was seized.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Mr Ward was at 316 Furnace St Apt # 1 at approximately 0315 hrs. Mr Ward was involved in a physical altercation with at least one other male occupant of the apartment. During that altercation Ward suffered at least three gunshot wounds. All occupants of the apartment, except Mr Ward, fled the area after the shooting. At approximately 0610 hrs, Subjects that had been inside the apartment returned and found Mr Ward injured inside the apartment. They then attempted to transport Mr Ward to the EMH Medical Center and were stopped by police on Broad St. Mr Ward will be interviewed when his medical condition permits,
The investigation has revealed that at approximately 0318 hrs February 23, 2007 an officer was waved down in the three hundred block of Furnace St by a citizen indicating he believed someone was shooting at him_ Officers saw three subjects run to a car and attempt to leave the area. Officers stopped these subjects from leaving to investigate the complaint. One of the vehicle occupants. Derrick Bohannon, age 24, of Elyria was arrested for Obstructing Official Business, for attempting to leave prior to the investigation, being complete. No firearms were located and these individuals denied any involvement. The subject that had advised the officers of the gun shots left the area and could not be located.
