Fatal Accident On I-71 Kills SUV Passenger

Medina, OH - A fatal accident on I-71 southbound near SR 83 involving two semi trucks and an S-U-V is under investigation at this point. The accident happened around 8:30 a.m.

Unit #1 Information: 2000 Kenworth conventional tractor, Driven by William E Gardner, age 63, of Carmel Maine, was not injured.

Unit #2 Information: 2003 Volvo Conventional Tractor, Driven by Bina Wambura of Guntersville Alabama, was not injured.

Unit #3 Information: 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada, was Driven by Jameson D App, Age 22, of Columbus Ohio, Mr. App was taken to Lodi Hospital treated and released. The Oldsmobile also had two passengers inside the vehicle.

Unit #3 Right Front passenger, Jordan D Roush age 24, of Columbus Ohio, was taken to Lodi Hospital where he was treated and released.

Unit #3 Right Rear passenger, Sean L Ritzman age 22, of Columbus Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Units 1, 2, and 3 were all southbound on IR 71. Unit 3 attempted to make a lane change driving off the left side of the roadway, overcorrecting driving across three lanes of travel. Unit 3 then drove off the right side of the roadway striking the guardrail, coming back onto the roadway and was struck by Unit 1. While trying to avoid Unit 3, Unit I crossed his lane of travel striking Unit 2 in the rear portion of the trailer.

The right rear passenger of Unit 3, Sean L Ritzman, age 22, of Columbus was ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a safety belt. Safety belts were in use by all other parties involved.

Alcohol and or drugs are believed to have played a factor in the crash. This crash remains under investigation.
