Indians Sign Barfield, Three Others

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) - Indians second baseman Josh Barfield, acquired in an offseason trade from the San Diego Padres, was among the final four players signed to one-year contracts for the 2007 season by Cleveland on Friday.

Right-handers Fausto Carmona and Tom Mastny along with left-hander Rafael Perez also signed.

Though all 40 members of Cleveland's roster are under contract for 2007, the organization would like to negotiate extensions with a few key players, notably right-hander Jake Westbrook, who is eligible for free agency after the World Series.

Team president Paul Dolan is expected to arrive at training camp next week and announce a new multiyear contract for general manager Mark Shapiro.

Barfield, 24, hit .280 with 13 homers, 58 RBIs and 21 stolen bases as a rookie in 2006 for the Padres. The Indians, seeking to shore up a shaky infield defense, acquired the son of former All-Star Jesse Barfield in November for young third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and right-hander Andrew Brown.

Carmona, Mastny and Perez were called up from the minors and made their major-league debuts in 2006. They are in training camp, trying to win a spot on the 25-man roster this spring.
