Mentor: 1st Grader Dies from Strep Infection

Mentor, OH - Developing news out of Mentor - where a young child has died suddenly.

19 Action News has learned seven-year-old Elisha Jakowski died Monday - he had strep throat.

Elisha was a first grade student at Rice Elementary and got sick on Sunday.

The coroner says the little boy suffered an overwhelming systemic infection with a group a streptoccus bacteria.

This type of infection does not require probhylactic antibiotic therapy of contacts.

However, strep infections, are contagious and are common, especially in children, and any child who becomes ill with a sore throat or fever should contact their doctor.

Crisis counselors are available at the school for students if they have any questions.
