EVP & GM Enters 16th Season with Organization, 6th as General Manager
CLEVELAND, OH --- Cleveland Indians President PAUL DOLAN today announced Indians Executive Vice President and General Manager MARK SHAPIRO has agreed to a 5-year contract extension though the 2012 season.
Shapiro is entering his 6th season as Executive VP and General Manager and his 16th overall after joining the organization in 1992. During Mark's five seasons as General Manager since 2002 he has re-constructed the Major League club and revitalized the Player Development System through a series of trades, free agent signings and the First-Year Player Draft.
After recording double digit win increases in 2004 (68 to 80 wins) and 2005 (80 to 93 wins) Shapiro was named "Executive of the Year" by the Sporting News and Baseball America following the 2005 season. The 93 wins in 2005 tied for the 8th highest win total in Cleveland Indians franchise history. After the 2006 season the Cleveland Indians organization was named "Organization of the Year" by TOPPS for the first time ever.
"We are extremely pleased with the leadership, direction, passion and pride Mark has instilled in the Cleveland Indians organization," said Indians President PAUL DOLAN. "It's crucial for Mark to remain in this executive role to ensure the continued success of the Cleveland Indians franchise."
