LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Jeff Walz was set to be hired as the
women's basketball coach at Louisville on Tuesday after spending
the last five seasons as a Maryland assistant, a person close to
the negotiations told The Associated Press.
Walz will replace Tom Collen, who left to coach Arkansas.
A news conference was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich did not immediately return
a phone call for comment. The person who told the AP about the
hiring requested anonymity because the deal had yet to be
The 35-year-old Walz was an assistant at Maryland under Brenda
Frese when the Terrapins won the 2006 national championship. Walz
previously served as an assistant at Minnesota, Nebraska and
Louisville went 27-8 this season, losing to Arizona State in the
second round of the NCAA tournament. The Cardinals finished tied
for fifth in the Big East and cracked the top 25 for the first time
in school history.
