Canton Police Investigate 13-Year-Old's Shooting Death

Canton, OH - Authorities are trying to piece together a shooting that claimed the life of 13-year-old Rashad Mathews last week.

The teenager was shot Friday inside of a home located on the 300 block of Hammerly Court S.E., which is where the teen lived, along with his Grandmother, Ruth Mathews.

Canton Police say that the gun was a .38 caliber revolver, and that there were two other boys, possibly cousins, with Rashad when he was shot. The boys say that it was an accidental shooting.

Mathew's Grandmother, Ruth Mathews, was home at the time of the shooting and says she heard a pop and thought it was a firework.

Police are investigating whether or not Rashad shot himself or if someone else pulled the trigger, and are also trying to figure out where the loaded firearm came from to begin with.

Rashad Mathews was pronounced dead at Akron Children's Hospital, cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.
