Toledo Officers Seriously Injured In Crash

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Two city police officers were seriously
injured Friday night after the cruiser they were in crashed into a
utility pole, police said.

"The officers were responding to assist another unit when the
accident happened," said Police Chief Mike Navarre. He said
investigators received reports that the driver may have swerved to
avoid a pedestrian or a car that turned in front of the cruiser.

The officers, both men, were seriously hurt and transported to
University of Toledo Medical Center after the accident, which
happened around 9 p.m., Navarre said.

"I had been home about five minutes when I got the phone call
about the crash," said Navarre, who had attended the Toledo Mud
Hens game. "These are the kind of calls as a police chief you
don't want to get."
