Cleveland, OH - Cavaliers fans have voted Anderson Varejao as this season's recipient of the Continental "Work Hard, Fly Right" award. As voted on by the fans, the award is presented at the end of the season to a Cavaliers player based on his hard work and positive attitude. The player that accumulates the most fan votes receives one million Continental Airlines OnePass® miles to donate to his favorite charity, courtesy of Continental Airlines.
Varejao will be receiving his award in a half-time ceremony on Fan Appreciation Night when the Cavs take on the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, April 18th at Quicken Loans Arena. Varejao has selected Instituto Solidario Maximo Vieira Varejao in his native homeland of Brazil as the recipient of his one million OnePass miles.
Instituto Solidario Maximo Vieira Varejao serves children in need from ages 7-14 in the city of Cariacia and seven surrounding communities. Its programs promote individual dignity by providing education, sporting activities, handcraft and music classes, regular meals and proper hygiene. It also provides drug counseling for drug-addicted people and shelter for the elderly. The institute was created two years ago and has already served over 800 children.
While best known for his distinctive hair, energy and hustle, Varejao has played in 80 games (including six starts) and averaged 6.7 points, 6.7 rebounds on 48% shooting. He also ranks second in the NBA in rebounds per game among all reserves.
