Energy Prices Surge, Helping Stock Market

NEW YORK (AP) - Stock are mostly higher, with the Dow up by more
than 50 points in late morning. Stock prices had been searching for
direction in the early going, as investors looed at a heavy helping
of earnings reports and fresh economic data.

Surging energy prices helped fuel a six-tenths-of-one-percent
rise in the March Consumer Price Index. At the same time, the core
rate was up just one-tenth. It excludes volatile food and energy

Construction of new homes posted a second consecutive monthly
increase in March, rising eight-tenths of one percent. While the
figure is seen boosted by warm weather, building permits were also
on the rise.
