Group Wants Cleveland School Renamed For Parent-Activist

CLEVELAND (AP) - A group of parents and community leaders in Cleveland plans to ask the city school board to rename a school for a mother of 12 who spent decades pushing for reforms in the district.

Mary Conner, who died August 24th at 73, chaired a parents group and was active in another group that worked for peaceful school desegregation. She also lead rallies for school improvements and even walked the picket line with striking teachers in 1979.

Martha Smith -- herself a mother, school activist and former city school board member -- says she believes parents would like to see one of their own honored.

Smith says the group hopes the school board renames Patrick Henry Middle School after Conner, whose children attended the school.
