Man Dies After Canoe Tips Over In Lake Erie

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A man whose canoe tipped over in Lake Erie died after he was in the 33-degree water for about 45 minutes.

Shawn Perry, 34, of Sylvania, died Tuesday after being flown to Toledo Hospital.

Gary Jones, who also was in the canoe, was pulled out of the water after swimming near the shore and yelling for help. He was in fair condition Wednesday at Riverside Mercy Hospital.

Jones told rescuers that his dog stood up in the canoe, causing it to tip over. The dog survived.

Both men were wearing life jackets, but neither had suitable clothing for the water conditions, said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Paul Lentini.
