First Step Toward Conjoined Twins' Separation Surgery

CLEVELAND (AP) - Doctors in Cleveland today plan to make their first moves toward surgery to separate three-year-old twins joined at the head.

Physicians say they'll insert a catheter to see if blood vessels running between the girls' brains can be walled off. The non-surgical procedure is similar to one used in brain aneurysm cases.

Doctors say they're trying to do as much work as they can outside the operating room.

Anastasia and Tatiana Dogaru face a series of surgeries set to start next month at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

The twins were born in Italy. They arrived in Cleveland several weeks ago after two-and-a-half years in Dallas.
