Azerbaijani President In Cleveland For Medical Checkup

CLEVELAND (AP) - Azerbaijani President Geidar Aliyev (pictured, right) wrapped up meetings at the World Economic Forum in New York and left for a medical exam at the Cleveland Clinic, his government said Monday.

The presidential press service said Aliyev arrived in the United States on Wednesday and left New York for the Cleveland Clinic. In 1999 he had heart bypass surgery at the research hospital.

Elin Suleymanov, press officer at the Azerbaijani embassy in Washington, said the checkup was routine. "When he visits the U.S., he goes to the clinic (for a medical exam)," he said.

The checkup will last several days, according to Suleymanov, who wasn't sure when Aliyev would leave for home.

Aliyev was elected president of the former Soviet republic located on the Caspian Sea in 1993 and was re-elected in 1998.
