NEW CONCORD, Ohio (AP) - Authorities said Tuesday they arrested a Muskingum College student whose newborn boy was found dead in a trash bin.
The 21-year-old student, whose name was not released, was being held Tuesday in the Muskingum County jail pending formal charges.
She was arrested after being treated at a hospital.
An autopsy on the baby was scheduled for Tuesday. The results were not expected for several days.
The baby, wrapped in a blanket, was discovered about 6 p.m. Monday in a bin behind the woman's home that she shared with five women across the street from the college, Detective Lt. Steve Welker said. Coroner Howard Marsh declared the baby dead at the scene.
Neighbors declined to comment Monday night. New Concord is about 65 miles east of Columbus.
Apparently one of the mother's roommates called police, Welker said.
College officials were saddened by the news, said Ransom Clark, vice president for administration.
"It's hard to describe at the moment ... the enormous sympathy we feel for everyone involved," Clark said. "We feel so sorry for everybody."
