CANTON, Ohio (AP) - A 13-year-old boy hospitalized with ankle, skull and kidney injuries told social workers that his father beat him because he clogged the washing machine.
A judge, in a ruling Wednesday, ordered Stephen Polen removed from the custody of Brook Polen, 34, of Minerva. The boy had been living with Polen since moving from California after his mother died in July.
Authorities said Polen hit the boy repeatedly, at times with a hammer or mallet, before dragging him into a shower. The cold water was still running when police found the unconscious boy on Monday.
The father was charged with felonious assault, child endangering and domestic violence. He pleaded innocent in Alliance Municipal Court and was being held in the Stark County Jail.
The boy was moved from Aultman Hospital on Wednesday and taken to Childrens Hospital Medical Center of Akron for treatment of his kidneys. The hospital withheld a condition report because of his custody status.
The boy's grandfather, Robert Polen, 62, who shares a house with his son, said the boy had been unruly and said his son was defending himself in the encounter. Brook Polen denied hitting his son with any weapon.
