Town Removes Basketball Rims From Parks

WICKLIFFE, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio town has taken down basketball rims from its parks.

Officials in Wickliffe near Cleveland reacted earlier this month to complaints from residents of profanity and other misconduct at the courts.

But critics say Wickliffe and other cities that clear their basketball courts are overreacting to complaints that might be fueled by racism.

Wickliffe police chief James Fox says he visited the courts several times and found no problems serious enough to bar basketball.

Mayor Thomas Ruffner says he plans to put the hoops back up after a City Council committee discusses tightening security on Monday.
