Cleveland Diocese To Close Lakefront Retreat Center

CLEVELAND (AP) - A spiritual retreat center alongside Lake Erie will be closed by the Cleveland Catholic Diocese because it costs too much to run.

Last year the Saint Joseph Christian Life Center needed a 20-thousand dollar monthly subsidy.

Retreat center director Father Walter Hyclak (HY'-clack) says sometimes a good steward must say "amen" to a ministry that's hard to support financially.

The 12 acres of lakefront property could be worth (M) millions of dollars. The church hasn't indicated what will become of the location.

Cleveland Councilman Michael Polensek (poh-LEHN'-sehk), who represents the neighborhood, calls it an example of the church abandoning the city.
