Transit Agency Raises Some Bus Fares 25 Cents

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Regional Transit Authority is raising fares on downtown loop buses and community circulator buses that run in city neighborhoods.

The board of the RTA, which carried nearly 60 million riders last year, voted Tuesday to raise fares from 50 cents to 75 cents on loop and circulator buses.

The increases are effective March 31. Regular bus and commuter train fares remain $1.50, and off-peak bus fares stay at $1.25. The changes come as the RTA works to balance its budget during the economic downturn.

Joseph Calabrese, RTA general manager, said about 40 jobs must be eliminated in a cost-saving move. Some will be eliminated through attrition or leaving vacancies unfilled.
