Fired Intern: Strickland Made Me a Scapegoat

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The fired intern who lost a state backup computer device when his car was broken into last month says he's being used as a scapegoat by Governor Strickland.

Jared Ilovar worked at Ohio's massive new online financial system. He was fired on Friday.

The device, stolen in June from Ilovar's parked car in Hilliard, contained Social Security numbers and other identifying information for hundreds of thousands of Ohioans.

He says in a statement today that he was never taught on how to properly store or watch over the data tapes when he took them home at night.

He also says he was given the job because he was the newest person in the office.

The theft of the device spurred a police and state investigation and also prompted a change in state policy for backing up the data.
