Investigators Seek Cause of Elevator Accident That Injured 2 Workers at Stadium

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - State and federal investigators are trying to find out why a cart plunged about 30 feet down an elevator shaft at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday, injuring two workers, one critically.

Officials said the cart, driven by one of the Aramark food service workers, fell down the shaft onto an elevator after hitting and somehow opening the elevator doors on the third level of the stadium.

The men were rescued by fire crews and transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

One man remained in critical condition Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police said he had head and chest injuries, while another man who was inside the elevator was listed in stable condition with head and arm injuries. The names of the injured were not released.

Officials from the state and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
