Ohio Agency Proposes Three Months Guaranteed Maternity Leave

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - State officials want to require that employers give women at least 12 weeks off after the birth of a child.

The Ohio Civil Rights Commission wants to clarify the rule that currently calls for a "reasonable" amount of maternity leave. Agency spokeswoman Toni Delgado says that's been too fuzzy and confusing for workers and companies.

The commission plans to hold a hearing in Columbus tomorrow to gather input from both sides.

Some business leaders are objecting to the proposal. An official with the Ohio Chamber of Commerce says smaller employers that can't afford to lose a worker for three months might have to cut back on other types of leave, include paid vacations and sick time.
