Use of Firearms Rises as Number of Bank Robberies Falls

CLEVELAND (AP) - While the number of bank robberies across the state are down, officials are concerned that more firearms are being used in the holdups.

FBI statistics report that bank robberies across the state fell 14 percent last year, but spokesman Paul Wilson says the agency is worried about the increased frequency of armed stickups.

Cuyahoga County had 13 armed bank robberies in all of last year, but there have already been eleven holdups with guns reported this year.

Still, authorities say injuries from bank robberies are rare. Nationwide in 2006, 13 people were killed in bank robberies, and of those 13 deaths, ten of those people were the robbers, not employees or bank patrons.
