Underage Driver Kills Brecksville Woman While Joy Riding

CLEVELAND (AP) - A stolen car driven by a 13-year-old boy hit and killed a 57-year-old woman Saturday while the teen fled police, a police department spokesman said.

The woman, from suburban Brecksville, was struck after officers in a patrol car decided to end their pursuit of the vehicle because of the number of pedestrians in the area east of downtown, Lt. Thomas Stacho said.

Police spotted the stolen car about 6 p.m. The woman apparently was crossing the street when she was hit minutes later, said Stacho, who didn't know how fast the car was going.

A 15-year-old boy and two 14-year-old boys also were in the car, he said. After the woman was hit, the driver slowed the car and the boys jumped out, Stacho said.

People on the street told officers where the suspects ran and three of the boys, including the driver, were arrested, Stacho said. A 14-year-old boy remained at large.

The car crashed into a building. No other injuries were reported, Stacho said.

The boys live near each other in Cleveland, and the car was reported stolen from their neighborhood on Thursday, Stacho said.
