Accused Cop Killer Found Competent to Stand Trial

Cleveland, OH - The man accused of gunning down a Cleveland police officer was found competent to stand trial.

Wilson Santiago appeared in court Thursday afternoon.

Santiago is accused of fatally shooting Detective AJ Schroeder last August as Schroeder and his fellow officers served an arrest warrant on W. 98th Street.

Schroeder was wearing a bullet-proof vest but was struck under the arm - the bullet pierced his chest.

Santiago has already pleaded not guilty to the charges filed against him - including aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder.

Schroeder left behind a wife and infant son who was just 10-months-old when his father was slain.

Santiago could get the death penalty if convicted.

His next court date is slated for August 16th - where the defense will get an opportunity to question the doctor who determined Santiago was competent to stand trial.
